Kolkata, 22 August (H.S.) The Supreme Court of India on Friday stayed an order issued by the Calcutta High Court that had stalled the publication of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) 2025 results. The bench, led by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, granted the stay, thereby removing the immediate legal hurdle obstructing the results’ release .
Originally slated for release on August 7, the WBJEE results were withheld following a suo motu directive from Justice Kaushik Chanda of the Calcutta High Court. He ordered the West Bengal JEE Board to cancel the existing merit list and prepare a fresh one based on a pre-2010 classification of OBC communities (66 categories) with a 7% reservation. The High Court further barred admissions under the post-2010 OBC classifications .
With the Supreme Court’s stay, the WBJEE Board is now permitted to proceed with declaring results using the existing merit list. Legal experts caution that although the broader OBC classification dispute continues to be adjudicated, this interim relief allows the long-delayed results to move forward .
Earlier, the Calcutta High Court’s division bench, which included Justices Sujoy Pal and Smita Das De, refrained from overruling the single-judge’s directive, noting that the case was already pending before the Supreme Court. Their next hearing is scheduled for September 2 .
