New Delhi, August 22(HS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed profound grief over the passing of veteran Indian-origin industrialist and philanthropist, Lord Swaraj Paul, recalling his invaluable contributions to industry, education, philanthropy and India–UK relations.

In a heartfelt message, the Prime Minister described Lord Paul as a towering personality whose commitment to public service in the United Kingdom and his unwavering efforts to deepen ties with India would remain an enduring legacy.

“Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Swaraj Paul Ji. His contributions to industry, philanthropy and public service in the UK, and his unwavering support for closer ties with India will always be remembered. I fondly recall our many interactions. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” Shri Modi posted on X.

Born in Jalandhar in 1931, Swaraj Paul moved to the UK in the 1960s, where he went on to establish the steel-to-engineering giant Caparo Group. Beyond his entrepreneurial success, he became widely respected for his philanthropic work, particularly in the field of higher education. Paul founded the Ambika Paul Foundation, named after his late daughter, and extended significant support to children’s charities, universities, and cultural institutions.

Elevated to the British peerage in 1996 as Baron Paul of Marylebone, he went on to serve as Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords. Lord Paul maintained close ties with India throughout his life, often advocating stronger business and cultural exchanges between the two nations.

His demise marks the end of an era in the Indian diaspora leadership in the UK, with tributes pouring in from across industries, academia, politics and philanthropy.
