Night Curfew Imposed Along Indo-Bangladesh Border in Meghalaya

Shillong (Meghalaya), 22 August (HS): To prevent cross-border crimes and infiltration, the East Khasi Hills district administration has announced a night curfew covering a one-kilometre stretch along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

As per the order issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), public movement between 8 pm and 6 am is strictly prohibited. Attempts to cross into Bangladesh or unlawfully enter India fall under the ban, alongside assemblies of five or more people, carrying of arms or potential weapons, and activities related to smuggling.

Authorities noted that cattle, contraband, betel nuts, betel leaves, dry fish, bidis, cigarettes and tea leaves are among the items most frequently trafficked in this region.

Citing the prevailing situation in Bangladesh, officials warned of possible infiltration attempts by militant groups, smugglers, and organised crime networks. The porous border areas of East Khasi Hills are viewed as particularly vulnerable, raising concerns over security and peace if movement is left unchecked.

The curfew order has come into effect immediately and will remain valid for the next two months.
