Kolkata, 22 August (H.S.): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday expressed deep grief over the demise of renowned industrialist, philanthropist, and prominent figure of the Indian diaspora, Lord Swaraj Paul. Remembering his close association with Kolkata, she described him as not only a business tycoon but also a symbol of pride for the global Indian community.
In a condolence message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Banerjee wrote: “I knew Swaraj Paul ji well and was fortunate to receive his affection. We had worked together on several joint efforts for the development of Bengal. His demise is extremely saddening. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family members and followers. May his soul rest in peace.”
Lord Swaraj Paul, who settled in London, was widely admired for his contributions to strengthening India’s identity in the global industrial landscape. Alongside his business achievements, he played a significant role in philanthropic and social initiatives, leaving behind a lasting legacy that bridged India and the wider world.
