Taipei, Aug 22 (HS): An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck southern Taiwan’s Tainan City this afternoon, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported.
According to the agency, the tremor’s epicenter was located about 42 kilometers northeast of Tainan City Hall, at a depth of 15.1 kilometers. No immediate reports of damage or casualties have been received.
The Taipei Times, citing CWA data, reported that the quake rattled the region at 2:06 p.m., followed by an aftershock of 3.5 magnitude three minutes later at 2:09 p.m.. The shock intensity was measured at 3 in Chiayi City, Taichung, Pingtung, Taitung, Nantou, and Hualien Counties, while Penghu and Miaoli Counties recorded an intensity of 2.
Tainan, one of Taiwan’s oldest cities and the former capital under the Qing dynasty, is known for its deep cultural roots, Chihkan Tower (Fort Provintia), and the renowned National Chimei Museum. The Ten Drum Cultural Village, a former refinery transformed into a vibrant cultural hub, is among its unique landmarks.
