Leh, 22 August (H.S.): Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Upendra Dwivedi and his wife, Sunita Dwivedi, President AWWA, pledged to donate their organs at Army Hospital (Research & Referral), giving a major push to the Armed Forces Organ Retrieval and Transplantation Authority (AORTA).
The move aimed at spreading awareness and inspiring the Armed Forces community to take the lead in organ donation.
Under the leadership of DGAFMS Surg Vice Adm Arti Sarin, AORTA has become a national leader in organ retrieval and transplant efforts, with Indian Army already setting a record with over 26,000 personnel pledging organ donation in a single campaign.
General Dwivedi called organ donation a service to humanity and an extension of the Armed Forces’ spirit of sacrifice.
He urged the personnel and their families to set an example for society by coming forward to pledge their organs.
The Army Chief also appreciated AORTA for its work in motivating soldiers and families.
During the event, General Dwivedi presented Chief’s Recommendation Cards to three frontline staff working in organ transplant care, including a housekeeper, acknowledging their dedication to patient welfare.
A tribute was also paid to donor families, who were honoured in a solemn ceremony for their courage and compassion in extending the gift of life.
