New Delhi, Aug 22 (HS):
A potential security breach at the Indian Parliament was foiled on Friday morning after security personnel apprehended a young man trying to scale the boundary wall of the complex around 5:50 a.m.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla identified the individual as 20-year-old Ram, who appeared to be mentally unstable and was unable to properly state even his name. Senior police officials confirmed that an investigation has been launched and CCTV footage from the vicinity is being scrutinized.
The incident comes in the backdrop of previous lapses in parliamentary security. Notably, on December 13, 2023, intruders had managed to storm the Parliament chamber during proceedings, prompting a major security overhaul. Following that breach, responsibility for safeguarding Parliament was transferred from Delhi Police to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
Friday’s incident has once again raised sharp questions about security readiness at one of the country’s most high-profile and sensitive installations.
