Kolkata, 21 August (H.S.): Tension flared late Wednesday night in the Sealdah railway bridge area after a group of Calcutta University students were allegedly assaulted and branded as “Bangladeshis.” Four students sustained injuries in the incident and were later discharged from the hospital after receiving first aid. The victims have lodged a written complaint at Muchipara police station.
According to sources, the incident began when a student from the university’s Carmichael Hostel visited a mobile accessories shop under Sealdah bridge on Wednesday evening. A heated argument reportedly broke out with the shopkeeper over pricing. The student later returned to his hostel but came back to the shop shortly after with some of his peers.
The dispute soon escalated, and several local shopkeepers allegedly surrounded the students, assaulted them, and hurled slurs, calling them “Bangladeshis.”
Following the attack, panic gripped the busy railway bridge area as crowds gathered, leading to chaos. Police rushed to the spot and managed to bring the situation under control. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
