New Delhi, August 21 (HS):

Senior IPS officer Satish Golcha, currently serving as Director General (Prisons) in Delhi, has been appointed as the next Commissioner of Delhi Police. A Home Ministry order confirmed that Golcha, a 1992-batch officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre, will assume charge with immediate effect. He replaces S.B.K. Singh, who had been officiating as Commissioner.

Golcha, who earlier served as DGP of Arunachal Pradesh, comes with a long and diverse background in Delhi policing. He has held several key positions, including DCP, Joint CP, and Special CP. Notably, as Special CP (Intelligence), he oversaw law and order during the North-East Delhi riots, showcasing his crisis management skills.

After the retirement of Sanjay Beniwal, he was appointed as DG (Prisons) in Delhi, where he initiated reforms in Tihar, Rohini, and Mandoli jails. With over three decades of experience in policing and administration, Golcha has earned recognition for his operational and administrative leadership.

His appointment comes just a day after a major security lapse involving Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, adding weight to the timing of the decision. Golcha now takes charge at a crucial juncture, as Delhi grapples with both law-and-order challenges and the need for police reforms.
