New Delhi, August 21(HS): As the fifth session of the 18th Lok Sabha adjourned sine die today, Speaker Om Birla expressed profound disappointment over the rampant and deliberate disruptions that marred parliamentary proceedings. Highlighting the corrosive impact of sloganeering, placard displays, and persistent deadlocks, Birla underscored that such conduct severely undermines the dignity and decorum expected in the nation's highest legislative forum.
Despite affording ample opportunities for cross-party dialogue on pivotal issues and legislation, the Speaker lamented the session’s truncated productivity—only 37 out of the allotted 120 hours were effectively utilized. This disruption resulted in just 55 of the 419 starred questions being answered orally, reflecting a significant setback in addressing public concerns.
Birla admonished members to uphold restrained and dignified language both within Parliament and in the broader public arena, urging lawmakers to set a commendable example for the nation and the world alike.
The session witnessed significant legislative activity with fourteen government bills introduced and twelve passed. Noteworthy discussions included a special debate on 'Operation Sindoor' culminating in the Prime Minister's response, and an insightful session on India's space program achievements.
The Speaker’s valedictory address called for a renewed commitment to serious, meaningful discourse, stressing that the people’s expectations demand more than disruptive theatrics—only focused legislative work and genuine debate can honor parliamentary responsibility and democratic governance.
