Hojai (Assam), 21 August (HS): A foreign national has been arrested from the Dabka Morajhar area of Hojai district with shocking revelations coming to light. The accused, identified as Abdul Karim, was found in possession of an Indian passport, Aadhaar card, and PAN card. Notably, the passport carried a visa for Pakistan.
Police investigations revealed that the man was impersonating a deceased person named Abdul Kalam in order to acquire Indian citizenship documents. Abdul Kalam, son of Abdur Roub from Hathikhali village in Morajhar, had passed away in Meghalaya in 2010. After bringing the body to the village, the foreigner developed close ties with the family and, with the alleged help of some members, managed to obtain official documents in Kalam’s name.
On Thursday, the accused visited the Morajhar Panchayat office seeking a permanent residence certificate. Suspicion arose among villagers, prompting Panchayat Secretary Muzammil Haque to alert the police. Following interrogation, police also arrested Abdur Roub and another man, Fakhar Uddin, for assisting in the document forgery.
Authorities revealed that the arrested foreigner had traveled to cities like Delhi, Varanasi and Kolkata. Interestingly, he does not speak Assamese, Bengali, or any local language. Police are now probing his real identity, country of origin and possible links with any banned organizations.
Local communities and organizations have praised Panchayat Secretary Muzammil Haque for his alertness, while police continue a thorough investigation into the matter.
