Guwahati, 21 August (HS): The Assam Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma at State Guest House No. 1 in Koinadhora on Thursday, took several significant decisions.
The Cabinet approved naming the four-lane flyover (elevated corridor) on GNB Road, stretching from Dighali Pukhuri to Noonmati, as the “Maharaj Prithu Flyover.” The government said the naming would inspire future generations by honoring the historic personality.
In another major decision, the Cabinet expressed gratitude to the Government of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for announcing the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati. The move is expected to strengthen higher education and research while creating new opportunities for the youth of the Northeast.
The Cabinet also acknowledged the efforts of the Environment and Forest Departments of Assam and Nagaland for successfully clearing encroachments from the Rengma Reserve Forest in Uriamghat. It decided that a joint tree plantation drive will be launched in the area from August 23, with the participation of both states. Assam’s Environment and Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary will attend the programme.
The Cabinet further approved a new SOP on Aadhaar enrolment. From now on, Aadhaar registration for individuals above 18 will be strictly regulated to prevent illegal immigrants from acquiring the document. District authorities will only allow enrolment under rare circumstances. However, the restriction will not apply for one year to SC, ST, and tea garden communities, ensuring those left out can complete their enrolment.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved the distribution of sanction letters to 3,14,773 beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) for the financial year 2025–26.
In the education sector, Tata Group’s Nelco Limited was appointed as a strategic partner for Samagra Shiksha Axom. Under the partnership, skill education will be rolled out through a hub-and-spoke model with 50 hubs and 500 spoke schools across Assam. In the first phase, 10 hubs and 70 spoke schools will be launched, connected via Tata Nelco’s satellite communication services. Each hub school will offer 10 modern trades with two trainers, while spoke schools will provide two trades with two trainers each.
