Siliguri, 21 August (H.S.): Security forces detained a Bangladeshi national near the India-Nepal border in Khapibari, Siliguri sub-division, on charges of illegal stay in India. The arrest was made by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) late Wednesday night at Gaur Singh Jote.

The accused has been identified as Lankeshwar Chandra Roy, a resident of Lalmonirhat district in Bangladesh. According to officials, Roy had legally entered India in August last year on a valid visa but failed to return to Bangladesh after the visa expired, continuing to stay in India unlawfully.

Troops of the SSB’s 41st Battalion apprehended him for overstaying beyond the visa period. Following interrogation, the accused was handed over to Khapibari police for further investigation.

Authorities confirmed that a Bangladeshi passport and national identity card were recovered from his possession. The Khapibari police have initiated legal proceedings in the case.
