Chennai, 21 August (H.S.) : PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss has demanded a high-level investigation into the expenditure for the construction of the Teynampet-Saidapet flyover, alleging that the estimates are exorbitantly high. The state government has estimated the cost of the 3.2-km flyover to be around Rs. 621 crore, which translates to approximately Rs. 195 crore per kilometer.
Anbumani pointed out that this cost is 50% higher than the usual expenditure for similar projects. For instance, the Koyambedu flyover was constructed at a cost of Rs. 95 crore per kilometer, while the Medavakkam flyover cost Rs. 101 crore per kilometer. In contrast, the Madurai-Natham flyover constructed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) cost only Rs. 100 crore per kilometer.
Anbumani accused the government of wasting taxpayers' money and urged for a thorough investigation into the matter. Wasting taxpayers' money should not be allowed. A high-level investigation should be conducted to look into the higher expenditures, he said.
The Teynampet-Saidapet flyover project has been touted as one of the most expensive in the state, with its cost estimated to be significantly higher than similar projects. The construction of the flyover began in January 2024, and the project is expected to reduce travel time between Teynampet and Saidapet.
