New Delhi, August 21 (HS): Senior batter Ajinkya Rahane has announced his decision to step down as captain of the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team ahead of the upcoming domestic season. While relinquishing leadership duties, the veteran has affirmed that he will continue to represent Mumbai with full commitment as a player.

Rahane shared his decision on social media on Thursday, writing that leading Mumbai and lifting the prestigious Ranji Trophy had been an absolute honor, but that the time was now right to groom a new leader. “From the new season onwards, Mumbai should have a fresh captain to take the team forward,” he said.

Under Rahane’s captaincy, Mumbai ended an eight-year title drought by clinching their record 42nd Ranji Trophy in the 2023–24 season. However, their title defense faltered last year, when they were ousted in the semifinals by Vidarbha.

While Rahane’s leadership record has been positive, his individual form with the bat has struggled for consistency. In the 2023–24 campaign, he managed only 214 runs from 13 innings — the lowest return of his Ranji career. He improved marginally the following season with 467 runs at an average of 35.92, but questions linger over his long-term role purely as a batter, especially with several younger players pushing for selection.

Sources indicate that the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) selection panel, headed by Sanjay Patil, had already been considering alternatives for leadership. With India star Shreyas Iyer unlikely to feature much due to international commitments, all-rounder Shardul Thakur has emerged as the frontrunner. He recently captained West Zone in the Duleep Trophy and is reportedly the committee’s strongest candidate. Vice-captain Shams Mulani and experienced campaigner Siddhesh Lad are also being discussed as possible options.

Rahane’s departure marks the end of a memorable leadership stint but also signals the dawn of a new chapter for Mumbai cricket, both in the dressing room and on the field.
