Morigaon (Assam), 20 August (HS): Two prisoners managed to escape from Morigaon District Jail on Wednesday morning, prompting police to launch a fresh investigation into the matter.
Superintendent of Police reached the jail after receiving information and confirmed that a drive has been intensified to track down the fugitives. The escaped prisoners have been identified as Ziyarul Islam and Subhrat Sarkar, both incarcerated in a POCSO case.
Police officials said Ziyarul had escaped earlier as well but was caught and sent back to jail. He is serving a total of 25 years for the POCSO case along with an additional 5 years for his previous escape attempt. Subhrat is serving a 20-year sentence for his conviction under POCSO.
It is notable that on the night of October 11 last year, five prisoners had attempted to escape from the same jail using a blanket. Authorities are now investigating how this fresh jailbreak was carried out.
