Kolkata, 20 August (H.S.): Saradha Group's supremo Sudipta Sen and his associate Devyani Mukhopadhyay were acquitted on Wednesday in three cases related to the famous Saradha chit fund scam of 2013. This decision of the court has started a new debate in the state's politics and public opinion.
Leftist actor Devdoot Ghosh strongly criticized this decision on social media. He wrote, Remember how many agents committed suicide in the Saradha chit fund case? ... And today I saw those two main accused coming out of the court laughing. Acquitted!
Devdoot's post received about 52 reactions within four hours. A user Deepak Sarvagya wrote, These two were just pawns. The real masterminds are roaming around in the society today as leaders and ministers.
Another user Shubhendu Dutta commented, 250 cases are registered against them. They have been acquitted in only three cases. So there is no possibility of release at the moment.
Notably, Sudipta Sen is currently lodged in Presidency Jail, while Devyani Mukhopadhyay is in Dumdum Jail. Both have cases registered against them under several sections including Section 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (fraud) of the Indian Penal Code. Despite being acquitted in three cases, both will not be released from jail because both are accused in other cases.
