A shocking incident unfolded on Wednesday when Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during a public grievance hearing at her Civil Lines residence-based Jan Seva Kendra. Police swiftly detained the accused and beefed up the Chief Minister’s security, while political leaders across party lines strongly condemned the attack.

According to initial reports, the attacker approached CM Gupta under the pretext of submitting a complaint. Once near her, he suddenly grabbed her hand and tried to pull her, leading to a brief scuffle. The assailant was immediately detained and taken to Civil Lines police station for interrogation.

Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva termed the incident “deeply condemnable,” stating, “During the Jan Sunwai, an individual handed some papers to the Chief Minister and abruptly tried to pull her. She suffered a minor injury on her head but remains in strong spirits.”

Echoing the outrage, Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa wrote on social media that Gupta’s fearless outreach and unwavering dedication to public service were making the opposition increasingly uneasy, compelling them to resort to “such shameful tactics.” He wished her strength, safety, and a speedy recovery.

Former CM and AAP leader Atishi also strongly criticized the attack, saying: “In a democracy, disagreement and dissent have space, but violence has none. We hope Delhi Police ensures the strictest action against the guilty.”

The incident has sparked wide political outrage, with leaders emphasizing that while differences are natural in politics, any assault on a constitutional authority poses a serious threat to democratic values.
