Guwahati, 20 August (HS): Assam BJP has strongly criticized Congress MPs for opposing the introduction of the IIM (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in Parliament, which seeks to establish an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Assam.

BJP Assam Pradesh spokesperson Kamal Kumar Medhi, addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, said the move by Congress reflects its “anti-Assam mindset” that has been evident since Independence. He said that instead of welcoming the Bill, which has been a longstanding demand of the people of Assam, Congress MPs chose to oppose it, including MPs from the state itself.

“This attitude is deplorable, disgraceful and a direct betrayal of the people of Assam. At a time when the Government deserved appreciation for deciding to establish an IIM in Assam, the Congress chose to oppose it. The Congress MPs of Assam must explain why they stand against the collective interest of the state,” Medhi questions.

He also recalled that earlier Congress leader Priyank Kharge had opposed the ₹27,000 crore semiconductor project in Jagiroad, terming it another example of the party’s “anti-development and anti-Assam stand.”

Medhi noted that the Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha yesterday when the Chair was presided over by Dilip Saikia, MP from Darrang-Udalguri and President of BJP Assam Pradesh. Despite repeated appeals to support the Bill, Congress MPs rejected it, allegedly to “appease their high command.”

Calling this opposition a “betrayal of Assamese aspirations,” the BJP urged people of the state to demand accountability from Congress representatives.
