Nagon (Assam), 20 August (HS): The Assam government is set to honor freedom fighter Manbar Nath, who laid down his life in 1942 during the Quit India Movement. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma will soon unveil a statue of the martyr at his birthplace Jamuguri in Nagon district.
On September 20, 1942, Manbar Nath, then just 18 years old, was shot dead by British forces while attempting to hoist the tricolor at Dhekiajuli police station. Despite his sacrifice, no major effort was made in past decades to commemorate him. Recently, the Sadau Nath-Yogi Student Union urged the Chief Minister to build a statue in his honor. Responding to this demand, Dr. Sarma allocated ₹15 lakh for the project, which is now nearing completion.
The Student Union announced that the unveiling will be carried out by the Chief Minister, though the exact date is yet to be finalized. Along with the statue inauguration, Dr. Sarma will also open a newly built gateway at Dimow bypass and visit the Jamuguri Gorakhia police station.
Nagon-Batadrava MLA Rupak Sharma and Roha MLA visited the construction site to review preparations and coordinate with the Student Union ahead of the CM’s arrival.
