Bongaigaon (Assam), 20 August (HS): The Bongaigaon district administration continued its anti-encroachment drive for the second consecutive day in the Jogighopa area to clear illegal occupations on government and forest land. The operation, carried out under the Jogighopa Inland Water Transport Department, aims to reclaim land illegally occupied by commercial establishments and residences.

According to government figures, over one lakh bighas of land have already been freed from encroachers across Assam under the ongoing state-wide drive. In Jogighopa, authorities have targeted nearly 200 illegal structures on the department’s land.

Heavy police deployment, including central paramilitary forces, accompanied the operation along with bulldozers to dismantle permanent and temporary structures. Officials confirmed that prior notices had been served to the encroachers and action was initiated after the deadline expired.

As of the latest update, the eviction process was underway under strict security arrangements.
