“130th Constitution Amendment Bill ‘unconstitutional’: Bengal Speaker Biman Banerjee

Kolkata, 20 August (H.S.) West Bengal Assembly Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay has strongly criticized the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill introduced by the Center in the Lok Sabha. Under this bill, the central government proposes that if a Prime Minister, Chief Minister or Union / State Minister remains in jail for 30 consecutive days in a serious crime, he will step down from his post. However, after release, he may re-assume the post.

Speaker Biman Banerjee not only called this bill “unconstitutional”, but also alleged that its purpose is to specifically target opposition leaders. He said, “Such a law will be brought against the leaders and ministers of opposition parties that they do not get any chance to keep them in the judicial process for a long time; they can never get bail.”

Biman Bandopadhyay says that this bill has been prepared pre-determinedly according to the script of the party in power at the Center.
