New Delhi, August 15(HS): In a surprising turn of events, Italy’s former world No. 6 tennis ace Matteo Berrettini has officially withdrawn from the US Open 2025, tournament organizers announced Thursday. Currently ranked 59th in the world, Berrettini has been sidelined since his first-round defeat at Wimbledon in June.
Having battled back from a persistent abdominal injury, Berrettini made a return to the court but subsequently skipped key Masters 1000 events, including the Swiss Open in Gstaad and hardcourt tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati.
Berrettini’s best US Open run came in 2019 when he impressively reached the semifinals, cementing his reputation as a formidable contender on the Grand Slam stage. With his withdrawal, American rising star Brandon Holt will seize the opportunity to enter the main draw.
The US Open singles competition is slated to commence on August 24, promising thrilling action as players vie for tennis glory. Berrettini’s absence will surely be felt, but the tournament remains primed for spectacular matchups and unforgettable moments.
