New Delhi, August 14(HS): On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu delivered an address to the nation that blended pride in the country’s economic progress with reverence for its democratic values, cultural heritage, and the sacrifices of its freedom fighters.

Highlighting the strength of India’s economic fundamentals, President Murmu said the nation’s 6.5% GDP growth rate, a stable and well-managed inflation, and rising export figures were clear indicators that the Indian economy was “in the pink of health.” She credited this performance to “carefully calibrated reforms, sagacious economic management, and the hard work and dedication of our workers and farmers.”

She noted that millions had been lifted out of poverty thanks to good governance and inclusive growth policies. Applauding advancements in infrastructure, the President highlighted innovations in the Indian Railways, including modern trains and coaches equipped with the latest technology, and described the inauguration of the Kashmir Valley rail link as a “historic accomplishment” with the potential to boost trade, tourism, and economic opportunities in the region.

Turning to a solemn chapter of history, President Murmu paid heartfelt tribute to the victims of the Partition of 1947, observing Partition Horrors Remembrance Day with a message that the nation must “never forget the pain” caused by the division, which saw both mass violence and the forced displacement of lakhs of people.

Reaffirming her respect for India’s democratic ethos, she called the country the “mother of democracy”, noting how, at Independence, citizens – regardless of gender, religion, or background – were entrusted with shaping the nation’s future. She underlined that despite numerous challenges, India made a successful transition to democracy, guided by the principles enshrined in the Constitution – justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity – all rooted in the ideal of human dignity.

President Murmu lauded the contributions of freedom fighters whose sacrifices, she said, launched a journey that continues to drive India’s progress. She stressed the need for equal access to healthcare, education, and opportunity, especially for those historically disadvantaged.

Looking ahead, the President expressed optimism about India’s technological future, pointing to the newly launched India-AI Mission and expressing the aspiration that by 2047, India would emerge as a global hub for artificial intelligence. She also emphasised the government’s focus on urban transformation, citing expanded metro networks across multiple cities and the success of the AMRUT scheme in providing clean water supply and modern sewerage systems to households.

Concluding her address, President Murmu extended her heartiest greetings to all citizens, reminding them that Independence Day is a celebration not only of freedom hard-won but of the unity, resilience, and aspirations of a proud nation.
