New Delhi, August 14 (HS): Hockey India has mourned the passing of Dr. Vece Paes, the celebrated midfielder from Indian hockey’s golden era and a key member of the 1972 Munich Olympics bronze‑winning team, calling it the end of an illustrious chapter in the country’s sporting history. He was 80.
A gifted athlete and a pioneer in sports science, Dr. Paes inspired countless players and enthusiasts. His career stretched far beyond the hockey field — he was also a doctor of sports medicine, an accomplished multi‑sport player, and a passionate sports administrator.
From Goa to Olympic Glory
Born in April 1945 in Goa, Paes distinguished himself both in academics and athletics. Apart from hockey, he excelled in cricket, football, and rugby, later serving as President of the Indian Rugby Football Union (1996–2002). He also led the prestigious Calcutta Cricket and Football Club.
His legacy in Indian sport was mirrored in his family — his son, tennis star Leander Paes, has often said it was his father who inspired his dream to represent India at the Olympics.
Tributes from the Hockey Fraternity
Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey called Paes’s passing “a deeply sad day for Indian hockey”, saying:
“The Munich Olympic medal stands as a testament to his patience and determination. I was privileged to meet him on several occasions and was always moved by his passion for the game. He was a staunch advocate for promoting India’s sporting culture. Our deepest condolences go to his wife Jennifer, his son Leander, and the entire family.”
Hockey India Secretary General Bholanath Singh added:
“His contribution to hockey and sports science will always be remembered, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations.”
A Sporting Legacy Beyond Hockey
From scripting Olympic history to advancing sports medicine, Dr. Vece Paes’s life was defined by excellence, versatility, and service to sport. His passing leaves a void that reaches far beyond hockey — a loss shared across the Indian sporting world.
