Durgapur, 11 August (H.S.) Durgapur's youth BJP leader Parijata Gangopadhyay has been arrested for allegedly beating an old man accusing him of cow smuggling and parading him on the road by holding his ears. After the video went viral on social media, the incident was strongly condemned and a complaint was lodged in the Coke-Oven police station. Based on that complaint, the police arrested Parijata from Dhanbad in Jharkhand on Sunday night and brought him to Durgapur. Durgapur ACP Subir Roy said, Parijata Gangopadhyay has been arrested. He will be questioned.
This controversy started on July 31. On that day, Youth BJP leader Parijata Gangopadhyay and his supporters had intercepted a small truck loaded with cows in Dumratala under Coke-Oven police station area in Durgapur. The cows were bought from Haat Ashuria in Barajora block of Bankura district. There were 14 cows in the truck. The people in the truck were beaten up by tying ropes around their hands and necks. They were made to do sit-ups by holding their ears. Some elderly people were also involved in the beating. The video of the incident went viral on social media. This incident was condemned across the state. It is alleged that the cow trader was beaten up and all his money was snatched. Not only this, the cows were also released.
The victims of this incident lodged a complaint against Parijata and his supporters at the Coke Oven police station. District Trinamool President and MLA from Pandaveshwar Narendranath Chakraborty also lodged a complaint at Coke Oven police station. Police Commissioner Sunil Chaudhary said that no accused will be spared. In this incident, the police had earlier arrested a total of seven people including Deepak Das and Anish Bhattacharya. This time the police has arrested the main accused Parijata. Regarding Parijat's arrest, Durgapur West BJP MLA Laxman Ghorui said, Taking law into one's own hands is not acceptable in any way.The police will take legal action.
