Chirang (Assam), 11 August (HS): On the All Assam Students’ Union’s continuing demonstrations, Assam CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma was unequivocal: protests would only result in more eviction drives.
Speaking about the Citizenship Amendment Act, he reminded that the case is pending before the Supreme Court. “Since AASU has already taken the matter to the apex court, it is under judicial consideration and I cannot interfere,” he clarified.
Campaigning in Kajalgaon on Monday, Chief Minister Sarma turned the BJP’s Vijay Sankalp Sabha into a platform for countering sharp attacks from the opposition.
Addressing Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi’s claim that the BJP was “stealing votes,” Sarma dismissed the allegation as out of touch with public sentiment. He pointed to the government’s welfare record — Orunodoi benefits to 40 lakh women, employment for 2 lakh youths and bicycles for 4 lakh schoolgirls — as proof of constructive governance. “Voters want development-focused campaigns, not endless mudslinging,” he said.
His criticism did not stop there. Targeting AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Sarma accused him of singling out the ‘Miya’ Muslim community. “If he truly believes what he says, he should openly declare how many such people live in his constituency,” the CM challenged.
