Sealdah Station

Kolkata, 10 August (H.S.): Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar on Sunday proposed to rename the station while inaugurating the air-conditioned local train at Sealdah station. He said that the station should be named after Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukhopadhyay, who made an invaluable contribution to the formation of West Bengal, in his honour.

Earlier in October last year, former state BJP president Shamil Bhattacharya had also demanded the same name change. He argued that Dr. Mukhopadhyay was deeply associated with the history of the Sealdah region along with overseeing the refugee camps. At that time Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had assured to consider the matter.

However, the Trinamool Congress has opposed the proposal, saying that there is no direct connection between Sealdah station and Dr. Mukhopadhyay. Trinamool spokesperson Arup Chakraborty suggested that if the station is to be named after any great hero, it should be Swami Vivekananda as his name is more deeply associated with this station.
