Chennai, August 10(HS): As the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) looks toward a future without their legendary captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, former India cricketer and selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth has named Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson as the perfect candidate to step into Dhoni’s shoes.
Dhoni, one of the most iconic figures in IPL history, has captained CSK to a record-equalling five IPL titles and remains a vital player both as a batsman and wicketkeeper. At 43 years old, Dhoni is widely expected to retire soon—possibly after this IPL season—prompting CSK management to search for a dependable successor who can continue the legacy of leadership and consistent team performance.
Srikkanth praised Samson’s cricketing skill and, notably, his strong brand value and popularity in Chennai, suggesting that Samson aligns well with the team’s fanbase and culture. “Sanju has got a good brand image in Chennai. I would be the first one to pick him for Chennai if he is willing to leave and comes this side,” Srikkanth said. He emphasized that Samson is the right choice for a smooth leadership transition: “Dhoni can maximum play this season, maybe not the year after, and then you can have a smooth transition.”
Sanju Samson, 30, has been an integral part of Rajasthan Royals since his debut in 2013. He has grown into a reliable batsman and leader, captaining the Royals and becoming their highest run-scorer with 4,219 runs in 150 innings. However, after a challenging IPL 2025 season—where RR finished ninth and Samson missed several games due to injury—there have been rumors signaling his desire for a new beginning. Media reports suggest that Samson has formally requested a transfer ahead of the 2026 season.
Part of Samson’s consideration to leave is attributed to the emergence of a successful opening batsman duo in Rajasthan Royals, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal. This change would likely push Samson to the No.3 batting position, a spot he reportedly prefers not to occupy. Moreover, rumors of a rift between Samson and RR head coach Rahul Dravid surfaced but were later denied by both parties.
Despite his desire for a fresh start, Samson has expressed gratitude to Rajasthan Royals, acknowledging the franchise’s role in shaping his career. “RR has meant the world to me… Rahul sir and Manoj Badale sir gave me a stage to show the world what I am made of,” Samson said recently.
Meanwhile, CSK is keen on ensuring leadership continuity and has also entrusted current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad with the helm, at least for now. Srikkanth indicated that Gaikwad should continue as captain even if Samson is signed, balancing leadership and squad harmony.
Dhoni’s legacy with CSK remains unparalleled, not only for his tactical acumen and match-winning abilities but also for his immense popularity among fans. His presence both on and off the field has been instrumental in anchoring the franchise’s identity. With Dhoni anticipated to step back soon, the franchise’s challenge is to find a successor with the skill, leadership, and stature to carry forward the legacy. According to experts like Srikkanth, Sanju Samson fits that profile well.
As CSK approaches the post-Dhoni era, Sanju Samson emerges as a strong contender to take up the mantle, bringing promise of continuity backed by his consistent performance, leadership experience, and acceptance among the Chennai cricketing community.
