Journalism education opening new career avenues: Kalyani University initiative


Nadia, 10 August (H.S.): Kalyani University has initiated a ten-day workshop to provide journalism students with practical training and expanding their employment opportunities. Organised by the Department of Bengali, the workshop will run until August 17. It will offer hands-on sessions in field reporting, interview techniques, news editing, photojournalism, and digital news production.

The university Registrar Prof. Devanshu Roy said journalism today is not just a medium of communication but a powerful career option for young people At a time when government job opportunities are shrinking, such skill-based programmes are opening new professional pathways for the youth.

The workshop features trainers from various universities’ media studies departments, along with senior journalists and editors from the print and electronic media. Author Vinayak Bandyopadhyay, speaking at the inaugural event, said literature complements journalism by equipping journalists with linguistic and expressive power. Poet Chinmoy Kumar Das described journalism as a powerful medium for engaging youth in nation-building.

Course Director Prof. Sukhen Biswas noted that many former students of the university are now working successfully in prominent media houses. He added that the National Education Policy (NEP) emphasises acquiring professional skills alongside subject knowledge, and this workshop is a significant step in that direction.

Head of the Bengali Department, Prof. Nandini Bandyopadhyay, remarked, “News has now become a force that shapes lives. Learning the art of its presentation is about mastering the ability to influence.”
