Morigaon (Assam), 10 August (HS): The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, known as the habitat of the one-horned rhinoceros, is facing a severe threat from Parthenium, commonly known as Congress grass — an invasive and poisonous weed. Agricultural scientists warn that the plant is harmful to both humans and animals, causing allergic reactions and, if ingested, stomach damage in wild animals. Due to its toxic nature, neither insects nor animals consume it.
Originally found in countries like Australia and Mexico, Parthenium has now spread to several parts of Pobitora, particularly in areas where native grass density is low. Pobitora’s forest officer, Pranjal Baruah, said the sanctuary authorities have initiated special measures to eradicate the weed. Under the drive launched on Sunday, four tractors cleared Parthenium from areas near the Pobitora elephant camp.
