New Delhi, August 10(HS): Distinguished ophthalmologist Prof Harminder Singh Dua, celebrated across the international medical fraternity for his groundbreaking contributions to corneal science — most notably the discovery of the Dua’s Layer in the human cornea — visited the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in New Delhi on August 2, 2025, and hailed it as an institution meeting, and in some aspects surpassing, the finest medical centres in the world.

Currently serving as Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Nottingham, UK, Prof Dua toured the Department of Ophthalmology, commending its state-of-the-art facilities, advanced surgical technologies, meticulous cleanliness, and a culture defined by disciplined professionalism coupled with compassionate patient care.

Delivering an inspiring lecture titled “Steering the Ship: From Studentship to Leadership”, he addressed an audience of senior faculty, postgraduate scholars, and healthcare professionals. Drawing on his illustrious career, Prof Dua offered insights into the transformative journey from academic learning to visionary leadership in the medical sciences.

Prof Dua also expressed admiration for the hospital’s upcoming flagship projects, including the Advanced Centre for Ophthalmic Visual Sciences, the Joint Replacement Centre, and the Oncology Centre. These initiatives, he noted, are being developed under the strategic direction of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, with Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi steering execution on the ground.

He praised the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) — led by DG AFMS Vice Admiral Arti Sarin — as a “unique and exemplary healthcare model, anchored in integrity, service, innovation, and clinical excellence.”

Widely regarded as a beacon of academic mentorship, surgical innovation, and clinical brilliance, Prof Dua has transformed modern ophthalmology through decades of pioneering work, inspiring generations of medical professionals worldwide. His visit concluded with a formal felicitation by Lt Gen Shankar Narayan, Commandant of Army Hospital (R&R).
