New Delhi, August 1(HS): The domestic stock market faced significant stress due to American tariffs, leading to a weak trading opening. Initially, after 10 a.m., buying support allowed the Sensex and Nifty to partially recover, but persistent selling pressure drove them back down. Ultimately, the Sensex closed down 0.72%, while the Nifty decreased 0.82%. Notable selling occurred across several sectors, including IT, pharmaceuticals, defense, real estate, and metals, with declines also in banking, capital goods, consumer durables, oil and gas, public sector enterprises, and tech indices. In contrast, the FMCG sector experienced a buying trend.The broader market reflected ongoing selling, with the BSE Midcap index dropping by 1.37% and the Smallcap index closing down 1.59%.

As a result of the day's decline, investors lost over ₹5 lakh crore, reducing the market capitalization of BSE-listed companies to ₹444.51 lakh crore, down from ₹449.72 lakh crore the previous day, marking a loss of approximately ₹5.21 lakh crore.During the trading session, 4,169 shares were actively traded on BSE, with 1,313 shares gaining and 2,703 shares losing value, while 153 shares remained unchanged. The NSE saw 2,667 actively traded shares, with 632 gaining and 2,035 losing. Among the Sensex's 30 shares, only 6 closed higher, while 24 declined. In the Nifty index, 12 shares moved up, compared to 38 that fell.

The BSE Sensex opened down 111.17 points at 81,074.41. Despite a brief recovery to hit 81,317.51 points after support from buyers, a subsequent wave of selling saw the index drop significantly, closing down 585.67 points at 80,599.91. The NSE's Nifty began trading at 24,734.90, fluctuated throughout the session but ultimately closed down 203 points at 24,565.35.Among the day's top performers, Trent Limited rose 3.23%, with other gainers including Asian Paints and Hindustan Unilever. Conversely, Sun Pharmaceuticals led the losers, down 4.51%, followed by notable declines in other major stocks.
