Kolkata, 1 August (H.S.) -In a significant move to strengthen security in North Bengal’s highly sensitive ‘Chicken’s Neck’ corridor, central and state agencies jointly conducted a mock drill on a key bridge over the Teesta River on Friday. This drill is part of the central government's broader strategy to enhance vigilance across critical infrastructure in the region, especially in areas considered strategic for national security.
The 'Chicken’s Neck'—a narrow stretch of land in North Bengal—connects the rest of India to the northeastern states and is of immense geopolitical importance. Recognizing its vulnerability, the Centre has declared the area and its key structures, including bridges over the Teesta River, as high-priority assets requiring constant surveillance and preparedness.
Originating in Sikkim, the Teesta River flows through Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Cooch Behar before entering Bangladesh. Along its route lie several crucial bridges, including those at Teesta Bazar, Sevoke, Gajoldoba, Mekhliganj, Haldibari, and Jaiin, all vital for maintaining connectivity between Siliguri—the gateway to Northeast India—and Sikkim. Without crossing the Teesta, neither access to Siliguri nor connectivity with Sikkim is possible, making these bridges key security points.
The mock drill involved personnel from central paramilitary forces and trained teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Under directives from the Centre, special monitoring has also been initiated at strategic locations like the Bagdogra Air Base and Hasi Mara bridge region.
Sources indicate that under the “Air Force Routine Watch Trial Programme,” aerial surveillance of the Teesta bridges via helicopters has been launched. Simultaneously, advanced training exercises are being conducted at the state’s largest army firing range, situated between Sevoke and Gajoldoba along the Teesta. These include the deployment of modern equipment and robotics, as well as frequent para-trooper drop drills from helicopters.
Former intelligence officials have underscored the importance of these measures, noting that safeguarding the Teesta bridges is essential to maintaining control over the ‘Chicken’s Neck’ corridor. The ongoing mock drills are deemed crucial for testing rapid-response capabilities in case of terrorist threats or emergency scenarios.
