Washington, August 1 (H.S.): The 25 percent tariff on Indian imports to the U.S. will now take effect from August 7, instead of the originally planned August 1. This move was announced just hours before the August 1 deadline expired. Alongside India, a 35 percent tariff has been placed on Canada, with potential additional duties concerning imports of weapons and oil from Russia.
The U.S. tariff rates are highest on Syria (41 percent), followed by Laos and Myanmar (39 percent), Switzerland (35 percent), Bangladesh (20 percent), and Pakistan (19 percent). Earlier, the U.S. President had postponed tariffs on 92 countries for 90 days.
Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that decisions regarding these tariffs will be made in the national interest, and discussions with the U.S. on tariffs will continue.
