Prayagraj, 01 Aug

(HS): A three-day conclave of agricultural scientists and officers began today

at the Shalom Auditorium of Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture,

Technology and Sciences (SHUATS). The event aims to discuss challenges in the

agricultural sector and brainstorm ways to double farmers' income.

The inaugural

ceremony was graced by the chief guest, Dr. Harendra Upadhyay, Director of

Agriculture, Uttar Pradesh, who lit the ceremonial lamp. In his address, Dr.

Upadhyay stated that the government's intention is to double farmers' income,

increase production, reduce agricultural costs, and minimize damage from pests,

blue bulls, stray animals, and wild boars. He added that the government will

review and guide the programs run by the university for the upliftment of

farmers and will also seek suggestions from them.

Dr. Rakesh Singh,

Deputy Director of Farm, Uttar Pradesh, emphasized the need to integrate

various components and effectively bring technologies like the IFS model, Super

Seeder, and Drum Seeder to farmers' fields. He highlighted that farmers seek

ease and simplicity and urged the university to help resolve issues related to

DSR (Direct Seeded Rice). He stressed the importance of proper field leveling

and water management when using a drum seeder for sowing.

Dr. Shweta Verma,

a distinguished alumna from SHUATS' 1987 batch of Agricultural Engineering, also

spoke at the event. She noted that while the university conducts extensive

research, the biggest challenge is to ensure that this research reaches the

farmers. She expressed concern that farmers consider many factors beyond just

yield. She suggested that technology should be simplified and customized

according to the land holdings of small, medium, and large farmers to inspire

them to adopt new methods for their betterment.

Dr. S.D. Mecarty,

Director of Research, SHUATS, provided information on the various schemes run

by the university, while Dr. Praveen Charan, Director of Extension, competently

moderated the program. The event was attended by Professor Dr. Bishwarup Mehra,

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration); Professor Dr. Ritu Dubey, Pro-Vice-Chancellor

(PMD); Dr. Ramakant Dubey, Director of Development and P.R.; along with all the

deans, heads of departments, and a large number of students.
