J&K UT’s election body lying headless: AJKPC

Jammu, 8 July (H.S.): All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) has condemned the inaction of political parties, the Lieutenant Governor, and Legislators regarding the headless poll panel in Jammu and Kashmir. AJKPC president Anil Sharma criticized elected representatives for their silence, suggesting it demonstrates their lack of commitment to Panchayati Raj Institutions. He noted that following the end of BR Sharma’s term as State Election Commissioner a month ago, no political party or individual has voiced concern over the absence of a new poll chief, indicating neglect of democratic processes.

Sharma asserted that MLAs from all parties show no interest in conducting Panchayat or Urban Local Body elections, which is why they remain silent on this issue. He contrasted this with their vocal stance on various other matters, implying a disregard for local governance. He emphasized that the State Election Commission is the only body authorized to conduct Panchayat elections under the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act and highlighted that these elections are already overdue by more than 18 months.

Sharma urged bureaucrats associated with the Raj Bhavan to uphold constitutional values and democracy. AJKPC plans to initiate a campaign throughout Jammu and Kashmir demanding timely Panchayat elections following the Holy Shri Amarnath Yatra and Independence Day.
