Kolkata, 4 July (H.S.) -

Dr. Shantanu Sen, a former Rajya Sabha MP from the Trinamool Congress and a practicing doctor, has filed a petition before the Calcutta High Court challenging the West Bengal Medical Council's decision to suspend his medical registration. The petition was submitted on Friday before the bench of Justice Amrita Sinha.

Sen stated firmly that he would not remain silent over what he termed a conspiracy. “If someone tries to snatch away the registration I earned through years of hard work, should I just sit quietly? No. I will seek legal counsel and I will win,” he asserted.

The suspension order, issued a day earlier, bars Sen from practicing medicine for a period of two years. The Council has accused him of falsely listing a foreign degree—‘FRCP Glasgow’—without valid registration. The degree, the Council maintains, is honorary in nature and does not authorize clinical practice. While the Council has written to the Glasgow medical institution seeking clarification, no response has been received thus far.

Dr. Sen, a former councillor in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and a suspended member of the Rajya Sabha, has been under suspension from the Trinamool Congress for the past year. His suspension followed allegations of irregularities at R.G. Kar Medical College and his public confrontation with then-principal Dr. Sandeep Ghosh, who is currently in judicial custody.

Despite his suspension from the party, Sen has remained involved with the Trinamool’s flagship healthcare outreach program 'Sebashray' in Diamond Harbour, led by senior leader Abhishek Banerjee. His continued presence in the program has been viewed by political observers as a sign that the party's top leadership has not entirely sidelined him.

Apart from the FRCP Glasgow controversy, Sen was also removed from the state’s Medical Council earlier this year. His associates allege that the current developments are part of a larger, well-orchestrated campaign against him.

Meanwhile, his wife Dr. Kakoli Sen, a councillor from Ward No. 4 in Kolkata, has reportedly also faced repercussions. She was recently removed from the official WhatsApp group of Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillors, further deepening the sense of political and professional isolation surrounding the couple.
