Guwahati, 4 July (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the first border pillar has been installed as a historic initiative towards resolving the decades-old border dispute between Assam and Meghalaya.
The Chief Minister said that with the status of an independent state to Meghalaya in the year 1972, the border situation between the two states was not clear regarding some border areas, due to which disputes and confusion arose from time to time.
He said, Time passed like this and after 50 years in the year 2022, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, a historic consent agreement (Border Agreement) was signed to determine the border at 6 places out of 12 disputed areas between Assam and Meghalaya.
The Chief Minister further said that as part of the implementation of this historic agreement, the first border pillar has now been installed. He expressed confidence that this border pillar will act as a strong bridge of friendship between the two sisterly states.
The Chief Minister said, This will ensure a clear judicial boundary for the common citizens and administration of both the states. Also, the areas which were earlier considered as 'grey zones' will now be able to have a completely legal government administrative system.
