Guwahati, 4 July (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has accused the Congress of having a double standard towards the Muslim community. Talking to the media in Tamulpur, he said that on the one hand the Congress asks for votes from the Muslim community, while on the other hand it distances itself from their attire and identity.

Talking to reporters, Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said, Congress tells its Muslim workers not to come on stage wearing a cap or traditional attire. Will we ever tell the Bodo brothers not to wear 'Dakhna'? Can anyone be asked to give up the gamochha? Has the BJP ever asked the Rabha or Sharaniya community to hide their culture?

The Chief Minister claimed that the BJP encourages every caste and community to come out openly with their cultural identity. He alleged, Congress is the opposite. They take votes, but keep Muslims with beards or traditional clothes away from the stage.

Appealing to the Muslim community for introspection, he said, “Now the time has come for the Muslim community to think for itself – do they want to walk with a party that is ashamed of their identity?”

At present, there has been no response from the Congress on the allegations of the Chief Minister.
