Kolkata, 4 July (H.S.) -

The Calcutta High Court has granted conditional permission for the proposed Muharram procession in the Bagnan area of Howrah district, after local police initially denied approval. The petitioners approached the court following the denial.

During the hearing, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh issued clear directives stating that no weapons of any kind shall be displayed during the religious procession. The number of participants has also been capped at 150. The procession is permitted to begin at Najakh Imambara in Dakshinpara, proceed to Khajuti More, and return via the same route.

The court also imposed a strict time window: the procession must commence only after 5:30 PM and conclude between 8:00 PM and 8:30 PM.

Earlier, Bagnan Police had declined permission due to the presence of two other pre-scheduled processions on the same day—one starting at 12:30 PM and the other running until 5:30 PM. This led the organisers to file a petition before the High Court.

In its order, the court stressed that all traffic and administrative regulations must be strictly adhered to. Law enforcement has been instructed to remain vigilant to prevent any disturbances. The Superintendent of Police, Howrah Rural Police District, has been authorised to deploy additional forces if necessary.
