New Delhi, July 31 (HS): U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, causing turmoil in the domestic stock market. Early trading saw a significant decline, with the BSE-listed companies losing 4.42 lakh crores in market cap within the first minute. Despite attempts by buyers to stabilize the Sensex and Nifty indices, both continued to show substantial losses. By 10 a.m., the Sensex dropped 0.68 percent and the Nifty decreased by 0.64 percent.
Key stocks like Jio Financial and Power Grid Corporation posted gains, while Bharti Airtel and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories faced losses. Of the 2,421 stocks traded, 599 were in the green, and 1,822 were in the red. Among the 30 Sensex stocks, only 5 were in the green, while 25 faced selling pressure; in the Nifty, 6 out of 50 stocks gained, and 44 lost.
The BSE Sensex opened down 786.36 points at 80,695.50, rebounding momentarily by more than 350 points before declining again, ultimately trading at 80,925.01 points, down 556.85 points. The NSE's Nifty began at 24,642.25 points, down 212.80 points, briefly recovering close to 80 points before succumbing to selling pressure and settling at 24,694.95 points, down 160.10 points.
The previous day, the Sensex closed at 81,481.86 points, a gain of 143.91 points, while the Nifty ended at 24,855.05 points, up by 33.95 points.
