Kolkata, 3 July (H.S.) The BJP's central leadership have appointed Rajya Sabha MP Shamik Bhattacharya as the new state president of West Bengal BJP. He replaces Sukanta Majumdar and will lead the party into the crucial 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections.
Bhattacharya is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the BJP’s strategy and campaign for the 2026 elections.
Shamik Bhattacharya made his political mark in 2014 when he won Basirhat South Assembly by-election in North 24 Parganas and became the first BJP MLA in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. However, he lost the same seat in the 2016 Assembly elections.
In 2019, during the Lok Sabha elections the BJP made significant inroads into Bengal under the leadership of Dilip Ghosh and won 18 seats. At that time Bhattacharya contested from the Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency against TMC’s Saugata Roy but was defeated.
He was given a ticket again in the 2021 Assembly elections but he lost again. However, he served as the chief spokesperson of Bengal BJP from 2020 to 2024. In 2024 he was elected to the Rajyasabha.
