Kolkata, 3 July (H.S.) -

In a proactive move to ensure the safety of devotees during the upcoming Ulto Rath celebrations in Digha, the West Bengal government has announced the deployment of an air ambulance service, keeping a helicopter on standby from July 4 afternoon. The arrangement is aimed at facilitating rapid medical evacuation to Kolkata in case of emergencies.

According to government sources, a private helicopter operator has already been informed, and the service will be on alert throughout the event. The setup mirrors the medical preparedness typically seen during large-scale gatherings such as the annual Gangasagar Mela, where authorities implement extensive health infrastructure to manage massive crowds.

This is not the first time such a facility is being provided in Digha. The state had previously arranged air ambulance services during the Rath Yatra held from June 25 to 28, following reports of an overwhelming turnout at the Jagannath temple in the coastal town. Drawing from that experience, the state has opted to extend similar services for the Ulto Rath Yatra on July 5.

Officials emphasized that in heavily crowded events like this, immediate medical intervention can be critical. The ability to airlift a patient to a major hospital in Kolkata can significantly reduce response time and improve chances of recovery.

The West Bengal government’s initiative underscores its commitment to public health and emergency preparedness during large religious gatherings, ensuring that devotees have access to timely and efficient medical assistance if needed.
