Putrajaya (Malaysia), July 29(HS): Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an unconditional ceasefire during a high-level meeting held in Malaysia on Monday. This is a significant step towards ending a border conflict that has claimed more than 35 lives and displaced over 260,000 people over the past five days. This historic agreement took place in Malaysia's administrative capital, Putrajaya, in the presence of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, and Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. The three leaders jointly announced the ceasefire at a press conference, calling it an important initiative towards establishing peace. Following the announcement of the ceasefire, a meeting of the border committee will be held in Cambodia on August 4.
The foreign and defense ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand will work together to establish a ceasefire monitoring mechanism. The agreement was facilitated with the participation of the United States and China, with significant roles played by U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
After the agreement, Trump said on social media, We have achieved a ceasefire and peace... I am the President of Peace.
White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt wrote on X, President Trump made this possible. He deserves the Nobel Peace Prize! Following the announcement of the ceasefire, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated, Now is the time for us to move forward towards restoring trust and cooperation. It is our priority to provide an opportunity for almost 300,000 people to return home.
Meanwhile, Thai acting Prime Minister Pumtham stated that this meeting reflects Thailand's desire for peace. Upon returning to Bangkok, Phumtham Wechayachai mentioned that Trump called him to congratulate him and assured that discussions regarding U.S. tariffs on Thai exports will now move forward.
