Chennai, 21 July (H.S.): In a show of strength against his father and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S Ramadoss, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss organized a protest in Villupuram, demanding that the State government extend 18% sub-quota reservation for Vanniyars.

Anbumani's demand marks an increase from the earlier request of 10.5% sub-quota, highlighting the community's growing assertiveness. The protest, attended by a large number of party cadre from within Villupuram district, demonstrates Anbumani's growing influence within the party.

Anbumani emphasized that Vanniyars constitute around 18% of the population, warranting a corresponding reservation. He criticized the DMK government for not conducting a caste survey, which, he believes, would provide accurate population data to determine reservation quotas.

The PMK president warned that the party's agitation is just beginning and threatened jail-filling protests and further actions if their demands are not met. This development is seen as a strategic move by Anbumani to assert his leadership within the PMK and to outmaneuver his father, S Ramadoss, in the party's power dynamics.

The demand for increased sub-quota reservation is part of a broader strategy by the PMK to secure more benefits for the Vanniyar community. Anbumani's aggressive stance against the DMK government reflects the party's efforts to position itself as a strong advocate for the community's interests.

The PMK's alliance plans with either the AIADMK or BJP are also being closely watched, with Anbumani reportedly keen on allying with the BJP to potentially secure a Rajya Sabha seat and return to the Union Cabinet.
