North 24 Parganas, 21 July (H.S.) One person was killed and another critically injured in a road accident that occurred at Jessore Road in Madhyamgram on Monday morning.
According to local sources, the incident occurred around 4:30 AM when two men were returning home from a wedding function. While they were crossing the road near Nazrul Sarani in Madhyamgram, a speeding pickup van crashed into their motorcycle. One person died on the spot, while the other lay critically injured on the road for a long period.
Eyewitnesses alleged that neither the on-duty civic volunteers nor the police took immediate steps to shift the injured to the hospital. The lack of response sparked outrage among local residents, who soon launched a protest. In the heat of the moment, a traffic booth was vandalized, and National Highway 12 was blocked for nearly two hours.
A large contingent of police from Madhyamgram Police Station, along with the SDPO of Barasat, reached the spot to bring the situation under control. The roadblock was lifted after nearly two hours of protest.
The police have initiated an investigation into the matter.
