Guwahati, 21 July (HS): In a continued crackdown on encroachments around the Silsako Beel, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) on Monday brought down the Indian Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) complex at Cachal.
This demolition is part of a broader initiative to restore the ecologically crucial Silsako wetland, which has been increasingly occupied by unauthorized constructions—ranging from private individuals to institutions and even government offices.
Officials have cited these encroachments as key contributors to Guwahati’s worsening flood situation, particularly during the monsoon.
Speaking on the matter, Assam’s Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah said the eviction is aimed at addressing long-standing waterlogging issues in the city. “Silsako is one of Guwahati’s major wetlands, but it has been heavily encroached upon. The removal of these structures is essential to mitigate urban flooding,” he stated.
The eviction drive has received significant administrative support and is being carried out in phases. Residential and commercial properties have already been impacted in previous rounds.
Authorities confirmed that all affected parties were served notices ahead of the action. The process adheres to the Gauhati High Court’s orders to protect and preserve wetland ecosystems.
The GMDA has signaled that further evictions will continue, with the goal of restoring the wetland’s natural water retention and drainage capacity.
