Kolkata, 21 July (H.S.) :

Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders Firhad Hakim and Mukul Sangma launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the stage of the party’s annual Martyrs’ Day rally on Monday. Both leaders accused the central government of promoting communal politics and marginalizing communities from Bengal and the Northeast.

Addressing a massive gathering at Kolkata's Dharmatala, West Bengal minister and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said the BJP had fanned the flames of communalism ever since coming to power at the Centre. “Some have switched sides to join the BJP, but they must remember that Bengal is the land of Swami Vivekananda and Rabindranath Tagore. Divisive politics will not be allowed here,” Hakim declared.

Referring to the police firing incident of July 21, 1993, which led to the deaths of 13 Youth Congress workers during a protest led by Mamata Banerjee, Hakim said, “That day, Mamata Banerjee returned from the jaws of death. If needed, we are ready to shed our blood again. We are her foot soldiers.”

The TMC veteran strongly criticized the alleged mistreatment of Bengalis by the BJP, stating, “Will you call someone a Bangladeshi just because they speak Bangla? Who has the power to throw us out of Bengal? If Bengalis are insulted, we will roar back in response.”

Taking the stage after Hakim, former Meghalaya Chief Minister and TMC leader Mukul Sangma also accused the BJP of sowing division across the country. “The concerns raised by Sushmita Dev in Assam are equally relevant to Meghalaya. We are facing the same discrimination,” Sangma said.

As he spoke, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee arrived on stage and paid his respects to the martyrs, adding significance to the moment.

“BJP's divisive agenda will never succeed in Bengal. This is the land of Swami Vivekananda, where communal politics has no place. The people of Bengal stand firmly with Mamata Didi,” Sangma asserted, reaffirming the party’s stance against what it calls the BJP's polarizing policies.
