Chennai, 21 July (H.S.) : The Greater Chennai Corporation has taken a significant step towards improving the city's groundwater table by installing rainwater harvesting tanks using eco-block technology at eight playgrounds across Chennai.
The project, worth Rs 10.8 crore, aims to minimize rainwater discharge into water bodies or the sea, enhance rainwater harvesting, and ensure effective flood management. Each playground can store up to 5 lakh liters of water, which will slowly seep into the ground, recharging the groundwater table.
The eco-blocks, made of recycled polypropylene using German technology, have been installed at Ashok Nagar Indira Colony Ground, Model School Ground in Thousand Lights, Crescent Ground in Anna Nagar, Mayor Ramanathan Ground in Egmore, Venkatnarayana Ground opposite Natesan Park, St Mary's Ground in Mandaveli, Trustpuram Ground in Kodambakkam, and Palmore Ground in West Mambalam.
The corporation plans to develop turf facilities on some of these grounds for local youth while ensuring cricket and football activities continue uninterrupted. This initiative is expected to improve the groundwater quality and mitigate urban flooding in the city.
